New drive to give labourers insurance, benefits

The Uttar Pradesh labour department has started a regularization drive in the city wherein construction workers, working in the largely unorganized sector, are being given ID cards that will make them eligible for a number of benefits. According to a report published by the NHRC, the state has had the maximum number of reported cases of bonded labour in the country. According to officials, this regularization drive will not only allow the labourers to have a number of benefits, but will also decrease the chances of any exploitation or debt. The labour department has roped in different NGOs in the city to help coordinate the registration drive. The scheme will give the construction workers, most of who are migrant labourers, accident insurance, maternity benefits and also provide benefits to their children. In the case wherein a labourer dies in an accident while working, his family will receive up to Rs 40,000 as compensation immediately. The scheme will also provide monetary support to pregnant mothers up to Rs 3,000 immediately after delivery. It will also ensure that their children have nutritious food for the first two years of their life. Also, parents will receive monetary support on a yearly basis of Rs 3,000 for boys and Rs 4,000 for girls. This scheme is an effort to bring a semblance of order into the largely unorganized labour sector which makes them even more vulnerable, said Atal Kumar, assistant labour commissioner, Noida.
